Bass Coast Economic Outlook Report

This Report examines the key drivers in the main business sectors in the Shire over the last 10 years, and makes projections about what is likely to happen in the coming five years.
Council's Economic Development Team commissioned this report to:
* provide some clarity about the likely impact on the business sector of the completion of the construction phase of the Desalination Plant
* pull all the different data sets together into one report and make informed analysis
* provide information for existing and prospective business operators in the region to assist with their business planning

Bass Coast and Phillip Island is one of Australia's major tourism regions.
It's not just the perfect base for summer activities, but an ideal base for winter fun, with the Victorian snowfields within easy reach.
The Bass Coast is home to 32,000 permanent residents, but this number swells to close to 100,000 during holiday periods, summer weekends and major events. Bass Coast plays host to some 35% of Victoria's international tourists.
Visitors to Bass Coast contributed $1.05 billion to the local economy whilst 2350 jobs were attributed to tourism in the Shire. Visitors are attracted by such renowned experiences as the world famous Penguin Parade, and the Motorcycle Grand Prix and Superbike Championships.

This report is a summary of statistical information on planning permit activity in Bass Coast for the 2011-12 financial year. The data is provided by local government authorities, the Minister for Planning and the Victorian Civil and Administration Tribunal.

The information covered in this annual report includes:
* the number of permit applications received, decided and reviewed at VCAT
* the estimated cost of works involved in permits decided and the value of fees
* the time to process permits and the number processed within sixty days
* the number of permits that required further information requests, public notice, referral or involved submissions
* the number of permits by category
* changes in land use
* comparison information with previous years and across schemes.
